Ultra Low Phase Noise Oscillators, Dividers and Accessories
The Poseidon oscillator delivers leading performance in ultra low phase noise oscillators. Applications include:
- Radar - including mobile platforms
- Telecommunications - SONET/SDH
- Radio frequency, microwave and millimetre research laboratories
- Exact timing requirements for installations from radio astronomy to particle accelerators
Compare the performance of the Poseidon oscillator range against the best available quartz oscillators (dashed green line below).

The above graph shows the performance margin between PSI's sapphire oscillator range and the performance which could be expected by combining the best of all quartz based oscillators (BAWs, SAWs, STWs, OEOs, and DROs).
The Poseidon oscillators are designed to operate in a diverse range of environments; on land, sea and in the air as well as under normal laboratory conditions. They do not require cryogenic cooling.
The SBO Class of Ultra Low Phase Noise Oscillators
The SBO provides radar systems' designers with a significant strategic advantage because of its ultra low phase noise characteristics which enable greater systems' performance.
These unsurpassed ultra low phase noise oscillators combine Poseidon's patented sapphire resonator and interferometric noise detection technologies to generate a microwave signal that is able to reach the thermal floor at offsets beyond 1 MHz. These oscillators are compact and rugged, with an operating temperature range to suit your requirements and benchmark vibration immunity in the low 10-10/g range.
See the product pages to learn more about the SBO HS and the SBO XPL. Both units can be packaged in a air cooled or conduction plate cooling format.

The SKO Class of Sapphire Loaded Oscillator
| This ultra-low phase noise oscillator is designed for mobile applications and gives a top level performance that delivers a real knock out. The SKO beats the performance any competition the quartz oscillator can throw at it. Read more. |
The SLCO Class of Sapphire Loaded Cavity Oscillator
These 19 inch rack format oscillators have set the standard in ultra low phase noise signal generation since 1996. Background to the technology that drives them is available in our Knowledge Base.
Sapphire Loaded Cavity Oscillator (SLCO-BCS)
![]() |
The Poseidon SLCO-BCS performance is so good the American National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) uses one as its master reference oscillators in its phase noise metrology laboratories. The SLCO is available in primary output frequencies from 8 to 12 GHz, and may have up to four Low Noise Frequency Dividers which can be incorporated into the instrument housing to provide up to five low phase noise output frequencies. |
Sapphire Loaded Cavity Oscillator (SLCO NCS)
![]() |
The NCS range of oscillators apply Poseidon Scientific's sapphire and technical know-how in an economic model while retaining the majority of the BCS standard-setting performance. The NCS range surpasses the performance of the best quartz based signal sources, and exhibits superbly clean signal and superior AM noise. |
Low Noise Dielectric Resonator Oscillators (DRO)
At Poseidon Scientific, customer demand has been the mother of invention. Our customers asked us to use our specialist knowledge to design simple and affordable dielectric resonator oscillators that deliver ultra low phase noise performance at competitive price-performance breakpoints.
Applications for DROs include:
- Low-jitter communications systems
- Frequency distributions systems requiring low noise and jitter
- Low-cost reference oscillators for phase noise measurement
- Radar systems
- Digital radio (QAM - quadrature amplitude modulation)
- Local multi-point distribution service (LMDS)
These high performance, low phase noise oscillators are free-running with mechanical and electronic frequency tuning.

DROs are small, high performance, cost efficient oscillators which operate across three frequency band ranges delivering the lowest phase DRO in the market. |
Poseidon's combined X-Band and L-Band DRO brochure can be downloaded here.

Low Noise Divider Ensemble
Poseidon Scientific's microwave sources deliver phase and amplitude noise performance that far exceeds opto-electronic oscillators, multiplied quartz or SAW devices. Now our engineers have created a module that divides both the microwave source frequency and its noise while preserving the sinusoidal form of the original source. Read more.
Low Noise Regenerative Divider
The dividers allow system designers to divide an oscillators signal to produce lower frequency signals. These signals can then be mixed to produce a range of outputs from, say 500 MHz to 20 GHz. Such a scheme lends itself readily to the creation of very low noise microwave synthesisers and Direct Digital Synthesis (DDS) clocks.
Poseidon Scientific's microwave experience has led to the refinement of the Low Noise Regenerative Divider (LNRD). Up to four LNRDs can be cascaded to provide outputs at 1/2, 1/4, 1/8 and 1/16th of the input frequency. Read more.
This unit is only available to existing oscillator customers.
DENA-5A Rack Mount Divider

The DENA-5A 10.240GHz uses one input to provide 6 outputs: One output delivers the input frequency, and 5 more at frequencies equal to 1/2, 1/4, 1/8. 1/16, and 1/32 of the input frequency. Each output has very low phase and amplitude noise. Read more. |
